What if I use gear oil instead of transmission fluid for my transfer case in my truck?

The transfer case I have is either a New Process 241 or a New Venture NV241.

Would it hurt or help the transfer case if I used gear oil instead of transmission fluid?

It's a 1991 Z71.What if I use gear oil instead of transmission fluid for my transfer case in my truck?
That transfer case was designed for ATF. You're transfer case will overheat and fail. They designed it to run off of ATF for a reason and if it uses it then it's not to be changed as gear oil is MUCH thicker. What if I use gear oil instead of transmission fluid for my transfer case in my truck?
Why would you want to do that? They were designed to use ATF, gear oil is much thicker. I did hear that you could use 10w30, although I wouldn't try that, either, since there's no point in doing so.
gear oil can really mess up the pump in that gear box, along with mess with your fuel economy. if it leaks solve the problem do not delay it.
yea will cause it to fail......its designed to run on the thinner trans fluid ...putting gear oil in will make it over heat and blow seals and fail
If it takes ATF , yes it will hurt and vice versa . Need to find out what is in it now !
