Is there a safer way to test an oil fired furnace ignition transformer.?

Is there a reliable ohm meter reading you can use.Is there a safer way to test an oil fired furnace ignition transformer.?
It's not safe but I use a well insulated screwdriver and see if a spark will jump across the contacts. It should jump between 3/4- 1 1/2';. There are signs of a bad transformer. one is that the furnace will go thump, thump, thump, thump very rapidly when it shuts off. I have had brand new transformers be bad also.Is there a safer way to test an oil fired furnace ignition transformer.?
You could check for an obvious fault such as open circuit but unless you knew what the resistance should be, it wouldn't help. Even then, its not a conclusive test.

Why not just power it up and keep your fingers clear?
I test them with a screwdriver across the terminals and see how far the spark will go. The test out electrically ok, but don't carry a good spark sometimes.
