How often do you need to change the oil in a car?

My dad, who bought a new Saab 900 in 1994, claims he's never had to change the oil. I imagine it's been done a few times at services/MOTs, but is this normal? I'd have guessed it's best to change every 6 months? How often do you need to change the oil in a car?
3000 miles or every 3 months..haven't you ever seen a jiffy lube ad????How often do you need to change the oil in a car?
Every 3000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.
I change the oil in mine every 6-7000 miles. Assumming your dad never goes anywhere.. I would still say he's pushing his luck!
I would say every 6mths change oil and filter got to do both at same time car will run very good for a lot of years
U should change the oil every 3000 miles to 4000 miles to be on the safe side.
It depends a lot on what kind of driving you do. The more city driving and stop-and-go traffic, the more often you need to change.

I'd say check every month or every 1,000 miles. If the oil is very dark brown (burnt chocolate) or black, change it. Also check its texture. If it feels gritty, get your car to the shop, pronto.
what your dad says may be true, when he purchased the car it may have come with a life time oil change, he most likely

takes it in every 5000-7500 miles for a change, some of the synthetic oils say you can get up to 15000 between oil changes. hope this answers your question
As often as the manufacturer recommends, depending on the type of use the vehicle gets. Typically for harder driving that would be every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever occurs first.. No, it's not normal and was probably done every time it went in for routine service, since it would void the warranty if it wasn't done.
Depends on your driving,

I'll say every 6000 miles,

but you need to check regular.
Yes your right, 6 months or 6,000 miles is the norm..

not changing oil will cause premature failure of the engine unit as the oil filter becomes clogged and can't filter harmful metal particals away which in turn damaged bearing surfaces etc...ps, when selling the car dont brag about the lack of oil changes!
Every 10,000mi for a petrol engine and about 6000mi for a diesel is standard.
every 3000-5000 miles
Manufacturers recommend every 7500miles for normal driving and every 3000 miles for severe service. Most people's driving habits fall into the second recommendation. But, depending on the oil used, there are other possibilities. For example, I used synthetic oil from day one on a 1997 Dodge Avenger. I changed the oil about once a year. The transmission just went up, but the engine was in great shape. I had 290,000 miles on it.
When ever the light comes on
every 3000 miles. i think.
it should be 3,000 miles or every 3 months, if the car has gone a long time without reg oil chenges, then u should have an oil flush done
every 3,000 miles or every 3 months
Every 6 months or 3000 to 5000 miles, depend on the car. Lexus/toyota do every 5000 miles. Other car companys do 3000. I personally do mine every 3000 miles. Oil is like the blood for your motor. When you run out or when it gets to dirty is when stuff starts to break down and fail
I change it every three thousand miles . I know most if not all manufactures state every five thousand miles I have worked on vehicles both Fleet and Personal vehicles I find that they last longer with more frequent oil changes .
i dont know. i would change oil, it is carbon based. it does breakdown in time. take a guess to what? carbon. try running an engine on that
most manufacturers recommend 3000 mi.or 3 months.however if the cars not driven frequantly or is driven mostly on the highway you could probably go to 4 or 5000.also if u use synthetic oil you can go longer.
5000km(3000 miles) oil and filter conventional oil.5000km(3000miles)filter10 thousand kms. oil and filter synthetic oil.Synthetic oil is great for engines that are broken -in.
Your Dad has been lucky. Saab's will run forever if properly maintained, but they (and other manufactures) have issues with oil sludging which clogs the oil pick up screen, starving the engine of necessary lubrication and ultimately causing engine failure.... It should be changed at or before 5K miles using a quality oil and renew the filter (actually the most important part) at each change.
6 months / 12 months - depends on what mileage you do
every 6 months or every 6000 miles is the best time to change it
I would definitely get it checked on a regular basis of 3-4 months- I learned that the hard way and ruined my engine in the process
Realistically, every 5,000 miles is fine. In recent years, automotive, oil change, and oil supply companies have pushed for every 3,000 - 3,500 miles. If the car is driven infrequently, the oil should be changed every 6 months.
